Applications are open for HMML’s Introduction to Arabic Manuscript Studies.

In this one-week intensive course which will take place virtually, students will be introduced to the study of Arabic manuscripts in historical, cultural, and material dimensions and gain an understanding of paleography, codicology, and philological practices, with a special focus on the application of these skills in a digital context.

The program fee is $275 (US).

The course is open to all individuals with a basic understanding of the classical Arabic language and a professional and scholarly interest in manuscripts. Beginner-level students will receive preference in the application process.

July 8–11, 2025

This conference will gather scholars engaged in research on Greek hymns found in the earliest extant sources of all Eastern liturgical rites. The scope of inquiry includes not only hymns that may be regarded as part of the (pre-)history of the received Byzantine rite but also those composed in Greek for non-Byzantine traditions. We particularly invite contributions on hymns that did not withstand medieval processes of ritual hybridisation and standardisation and those thought to have been composed in Greek but preserved only in ancient translations (e.g. Georgian, Syriac, Armenian). A diversity of methodological approaches is welcomed, and papers that clearly combine philological and palaeographical research with innovative literary or cultural-historical analysis are warmly encouraged. Proposals to present previously unknown and unedited material and those dealing with material aspects of the field will be prioritized.

In partnership with Dumbarton Oaks and the Zohrab Center of the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church of America, this four-week intensive course will be an introduction to Armenian language and paleography.

Course fees, meals, and lodging for participants are generously sponsored by Dumbarton Oaks.

The course will introduce students to the Classical Armenian language. Students will also be introduced to the primary lexica, manuscript repositories, and print and online resources available for research on pre-modern Armenian texts.

By the end of the course, students will be able to independently approach Classical Armenian texts with a comprehensive grasp of grammar and syntax, able to translate from Armenian into English with confidence.
